Equipment condition decision

New vs Used Bottled Water Filling Line

A used filling line is not automatically a lower-cost project, and a new line is not automatically the right investment. Compare the actual bottle and cap fit, machine condition, controls, documentation, missing equipment, relocation work, utilities and recommissioning evidence against one production requirement.

Direct comparison

Should a buyer choose a new or used bottled water filling line?

Choose used equipment only when its product, bottle, closure, speed basis, condition, controls and available documentation can be verified and the relocation and integration scope is understood. Choose new equipment when project-specific configuration, current documentation, defined acceptance and a coordinated warranty and support boundary are more important than acquiring an existing asset.

First check
Product, bottle, cap and output compatibility.
Used-line proof
Identity, condition, run evidence, software and documents.
Hidden scope
Dismantling, transport, refurbishment and integration.
Fair comparison
Startup-ready cost and acceptance, not asking price.

Compare One Production Requirement, Not Two Listings

Write the required output and package first. Then test whether each option can meet it without unsupported assumptions or missing line interfaces.

New vs Used Filling Line Decision Matrix

Decision area New line review Used line review Evidence required
Application fit Configured for the approved water, bottle, cap and pack. Original application may differ from the new duty. Nameplate, drawings, format records and sample test.
Output basis Supplier states reference format and acceptance method. Historic rated speed may not equal current sustainable output. Good-count test with duration, stops and quality checks.
Mechanical condition New components still require inspection and FAT. Wear, corrosion, damage, storage and missing parts must be assessed. Inspection record, measurements, photos and trial results.
Change parts Required formats can be designed into the order. Existing stars, guides, grippers and tooling may not fit. Controlled format list and part identification.
Controls and software Current control scope and handover can be specified. Obsolete hardware, missing backups or passwords can block recovery. PLC/HMI inventory, backups, licenses and access record.
Documentation Deliverables can be made contractual. Manuals, drawings, parts lists and certificates may be incomplete. Document register with revision and language.
Line interfaces Supplier can coordinate agreed upstream and downstream machines. Elevations, speeds, signals and utilities may belong to the former plant. Interface matrix and new workshop layout.
Service boundary Warranty, installation and training can be stated for the project. Seller, broker, refurbisher and installer responsibilities can be fragmented. Named owner for every open action and acceptance step.

Used Equipment Evidence to Request Before Commitment

  • Equipment identity: manufacturer, model, serial number, year if documented and current location.
  • Original and current product, bottle, neck, cap, label, pack and speed basis.
  • Operating video or witnessed run tied to the identified machine and test conditions.
  • Condition report for product-contact parts, valves, capper, bearings, drives, guards and electrical panels.
  • Complete change-parts inventory with photos, numbers and the formats each set serves.
  • PLC, HMI, drive and network hardware list plus recoverable software backups and access arrangements.
  • Manuals, electrical drawings, mechanical drawings, pneumatic diagrams and spare-parts documents.
  • Dismantling marks, preservation method, packing list, lifting plan and missing-item register.

Make Recommissioning a Visible Work Package

A used asset still needs a controlled route from its present condition to accepted production in the new plant.

Used-Line Recommissioning Scope

Work package Questions to close Completion evidence
Survey and gap list What is present, damaged, obsolete, missing or incompatible? Dated inspection report and priced action register.
Refurbishment Which mechanical, hygienic, electrical and safety work is required? Work scope, parts list, responsible party and test records.
Relocation Who disconnects, labels, preserves, packs, ships and unloads? Packing list, photos, lifting points and shipping handover.
Site integration How will elevations, conveyors, utilities, controls and guarding connect? Approved layout, interface matrix and utility schedule.
Testing What functional, format, quality and sustained-output tests apply? Signed protocol, results, deviations and closure evidence.
Support Who provides software help, training, spares and post-startup service? Named contacts, response route, parts mapping and agreed terms.

When Each Route Is More Defensible

A new line is usually stronger when

The package is new, several formats are required, documentation and integration must be controlled, or no verified used asset matches the duty.

A used line may be rational when

The identified asset closely matches the duty, condition and documentation are inspectable, and competent refurbishment and integration resources are available.

Do not buy from photos alone

Appearance cannot prove valve condition, software recovery, format fit, sustainable output, hygiene or completeness.

Keep a stop rule

Walk away or reprice the risk when machine identity, condition, software ownership, missing parts or test access cannot be resolved.

Information Needed for a New-vs-Used Review

  • Product water, target good output, shift schedule and expected operating life.
  • Bottle, neck, cap, label and pack drawings or production-intent samples.
  • Current workshop, utility and downstream equipment data.
  • Used-machine identity, location, condition, included parts, documents and test access.
  • Local capability for inspection, controls, refurbishment, installation and operator training.
  • One comparison boundary through delivery, installation, startup, spares and acceptance.

Buyer questions

Questions Buyers Ask Before Quotation

Is a used bottled water filling line always cheaper?

No. Add inspection, missing parts, refurbishment, dismantling, packing, freight, installation, controls work, change parts, utilities, testing and production risk before comparing the startup-ready cost.

Can a used filler run a different bottle size?

Possibly, but confirm neck handling, bottle pitch, stars, guides, grippers, filling cycle, cap system, labeler, packer and available change parts using the approved format.

What software should come with a used line?

Request recoverable PLC, HMI, drive and related configuration backups, hardware and version lists, network information, passwords or access arrangements, licenses where applicable and a restore test.

Should a used line have an acceptance test?

Yes. Define tests that are possible before dismantling and the final tests after installation. Record the reference format, duration, good count, stops, rejects, quality checks and open points.

When is a new line easier to justify?

A new line is easier to justify when the required formats, output, interfaces, documents, support and acceptance must be configured as one controlled project and no used asset closely matches them.
