Bottled Water Filling Line OEE and Downtime Monitoring Guide

OEE and downtime dashboards become useful only after the plant defines the production calendar, reference speed, good count, stop ownership and reason hierarchy. Specify the raw events and calculation basis before discussing charts, targets or guaranteed efficiency.

Quick answer

How should OEE be measured on a bottled water filling line?

Agree the scheduled-time calendar, format-specific reference rate, state model, count locations and good-product boundary first. Preserve raw machine events and reason codes, then calculate availability, performance and quality from the controlled basis.

Calendar
Define included and excluded production time.
Rate
Use a controlled format-specific reference.
Counts
Identify total, reject and good-output points.
Events
Retain machine, state, time and reason.

Who This Line Is Suitable For

Use these points to confirm whether this configuration matches your procurement scope.

  • Plants specifying line monitoring with a new automatic filling line.
  • Operations teams that need to separate speed loss, short stops and quality loss.
  • Buyers comparing dashboards, data interfaces and production-reporting scope.

Typical Technical Parameters

Time basis Controlled production calendar
Speed basis Format-specific reference rate
Count basis Physical source and good-output boundary
Data quality Raw events, revisions and reconciled tests

Freeze the Measurement Basis Before Calculating OEE

Availability, performance and quality can be combined into OEE, but the result is not comparable when suppliers and plants use different calendars, ideal rates or good-product definitions.

OEE Definition Record

Measure Definition to Agree Common Distortion to Avoid
Scheduled production time Which shifts, breaks, planned cleaning, maintenance and no-order time are included or excluded. Removing inconvenient planned losses without recording the rule.
Operating time When the line is considered running and how short stops are captured. Ignoring micro-stops because no manual reason was entered.
Ideal or reference rate Format-specific rate, source and revision used for performance. Using a catalogue maximum that is not achievable for the running bottle and pack.
Total count Count location and behavior during recirculation, rework, reject and counter reset. Counting the same unit twice or mixing machine and line counts.
Good count Point at which a bottle or pack is accepted as good output. Treating filler discharge as sellable production when later rejects exist.
Quality loss Which rejected, reworked, damaged or held units are excluded from good output. Combining unknown and confirmed quality losses into one unexplained value.

Collect Raw Events Before Building Reports

A trustworthy system preserves the source event, machine, state, start and end time, format and count basis. Manual reason entry can enrich the event without replacing the automatic record.

Minimum Production Data Set

Data Group Useful Fields Procurement Question
Machine state Ready, running, starved, blocked, planned stop, fault and emergency state. Are state names and transition rules consistent across suppliers?
Time event Automatic start, end, duration, source machine and line zone. What sampling resolution and timestamp source are used?
Production count Infeed, machine discharge, good output, reject and pack count as needed. Where is each counter located and when can it reset?
Format and order Bottle, cap, label, pack, recipe and production-order identity. Can losses be compared by format without manual spreadsheet matching?
Reason hierarchy Automatic condition, operator-selected cause, responsible area and comment. Can the plant distinguish symptom, cause and ownership?
Revision and audit Formula version, ideal-rate table, user changes and data-quality exceptions. Can a changed result be traced to a changed rule or source?

Accept the Monitoring System with Reconciled Scenarios

The acceptance test should reconcile dashboard results with controlled events and physical counts.

  • Run a normal production interval and reconcile source-machine, line and good-output counters.
  • Create planned starved, blocked and fault events and verify source, duration and reason behavior.
  • Challenge a quality reject and confirm the selected good-count boundary changes correctly.
  • Change format or reference rate under authorization and verify revision and calculation behavior.
  • Export or retain the agreed raw events so dashboard totals can be independently reviewed.

Official Performance-Monitoring Context

Sidel presents OEE improvement, reject control and line monitoring as data-supported operating work. These external examples do not establish a target OEE or guaranteed improvement for an AllotTech project.

Buyer questions

Questions Buyers Ask Before Quotation

What does OEE mean on a bottling line?

OEE combines availability, performance and quality against a defined production basis. The number is meaningful only when calendar, reference rate, count and good-product rules are controlled.

Should the filler speed be used as the OEE ideal rate?

Not automatically. The selected rate should be format-specific and appropriate to the measured machine or complete line. A filler HMI maximum may not represent sustainable good line output.

How should micro-stops be recorded?

Capture automatic state transitions with enough time resolution, source machine and line context. Add operator cause when useful, but do not lose the original event.

What is the difference between a downtime symptom and cause?

Blocked at filler may be the observed state while the underlying cause is a packer fault. Keep automatic state, source event, responsible area and confirmed cause as separate fields.

Can a supplier guarantee a specific OEE from a generic quotation?

A credible commitment needs a defined format, line scope, operating calendar, materials, utilities, staffing, exclusions, test method and responsibility boundary. Avoid accepting an unexplained percentage.
